Concrete slab homes see natural moisture migration year-round. Hardwood needs extensive moisture barriers and acclimation, and laminate is only water-resistant. LVP's waterproof core handles these conditions without specialized prep. Wear layer thickness decides how long it lasts. Builder-grade LVP uses 6 to 12 mil wear layers and wears in high-traffic homes within a few years. Wipe up the spill and the floor is unaffected. ### Pet and kid friendly A scratch-resistant wear layer handles dog nails, dropped toys and dragged furniture. Accidents clean up easily. ### Easy plank replacement Planks click together and float over the subfloor, with no nails, glue or mortar, so a damaged plank can be replaced on its own. ### Wear layer Measured in mils. 6 to 12 mil is builder-grade, 20 to 22 mil is residential premium. We recommend 22 mil for pets, kids or high traffic. ### SPC core Stone-plastic composite is the most rigid and dimensionally stable core. Wood-plastic composite is more cushioned but less rigid. SPC is the right default for Florida. ### Attached underlayment Most premium LVP has attached underlayment for sound and minor subfloor variation. Extra acoustic underlayment is sometimes added over concrete. LVP (luxury vinyl plank) and LVT (luxury vinyl tile) are the same category in different shapes. Both have a rigid waterproof core and click-lock installation. Vinyl plank is the generic name. ### Can LVP go in a bathroom? Yes. The waterproof core handles bathroom moisture, and we commonly install LVP in master bathrooms and powder rooms. For bathrooms with heavy direct-water exposure, [porcelain tile](https://jandastonedesigns.com/flooring/tile/) is still the standard. LVP is the warmer, more comfortable alternative. ### Will LVP show scratches from my dog? Premium LVP with a 22 mil wear layer resists most dog-claw scratching. Large dogs with long nails on 6 to 12 mil LVP will produce visible wear over time. We default to premium-grade in any home with pets. ### How does LVP feel underfoot compared to hardwood? Slightly cushioned and warmer than tile. Compared to hardwood, LVP is similar in firmness with a little more give from the underlayment. Most homeowners can't tell the difference walking on it. ### Can LVP be installed over existing tile or vinyl? Sometimes. If the existing floor is flat, sound and well adhered, LVP can float over it, as long as the added height clears doors and appliances. We assess the existing floor at the estimate and recommend removal or floating over. ### How long does LVP last? In typical residential use, expect 15 to 20 years before an aesthetic refresh is wanted. The wear layer determines functional life, and replacing individual damaged planks extends it further. ### Do you repair LVP as well as install it? Yes. Damaged plank replacement is one of our most common flooring repairs. With leftover planks from the original install it is straightforward. Without them, we can match many discontinued patterns from existing stock or recommend the closest current equivalent.
