What You Should Know Before Choosing Marble

Marble Is Beautiful. It Also Requires Honest Expectations.

Marble has been used as a prestige surface material for thousands of years. The veining pattern created by its mineral composition — primarily calcite — produces a visual character that no engineered material fully replicates. It photographs well, ages gracefully when maintained, and adds genuine resale value to Florida homes where it is properly cared for.

It also has real limitations that every client deserves to understand before committing. Marble is a calcium carbonate-based stone, which means it reacts chemically to acidic substances. Citrus juice, wine, vinegar, and even certain cleaning products will etch the polished surface on contact, leaving dull marks that do not buff out without professional refinishing. This is not a defect in the stone. It is how the material behaves.

Marble also requires sealing at installation and periodic resealing throughout its life to maintain stain resistance. Unsealed or under-sealed marble will absorb oils, coffee, and colored liquids and stain in ways that are difficult or impossible to reverse.

We tell clients all of this before the order is placed. Our job is not to sell a specific material. Our job is to help you choose the right material for your actual kitchen, your actual household habits, and your actual maintenance willingness. If marble is the right choice, we will install it with care and skill. If a different material serves you better, we will tell you that too.

For clients who want the look of marble with lower maintenance requirements, engineered quartz products with marble-like veining are available through our Auburndale showroom. We compare the two side by side during your consultation.

Etching is not a warranty issue. Marble etches when it contacts acidic substances. This is the chemistry of the material, not a fabrication or installation defect. We explain this before every marble installation so there are no surprises after the countertop is set.

Where Marble Works Well

The Right Applications for Marble in Florida Homes

Marble performs beautifully in the right applications. The key is matching the material to the way the space actually gets used.

🛁
Bathroom Vanities

The best residential application for marble. Bathroom vanities see less daily acid contact than kitchen countertops, and the visual impact of marble in a master bath is significant. The maintenance requirements are manageable in a bathroom context. Marble bathroom countertops are our most consistently recommended application of the material.

🍴
Kitchen Islands (Low-Use)

Marble on a kitchen island that is used primarily for baking, display, or as a staging surface can work well when the household is prepared for the maintenance. Homeowners who bake regularly often specifically request marble for the island surface because of how it handles pastry work. The key is honest acknowledgment that this surface will etch and should be expected to develop character over time.

🏠
Feature and Accent Surfaces

Fireplace surrounds, built-in shelving, dry bar surfaces, and decorative elements where direct food preparation is not happening are excellent applications for marble. The material provides maximum visual impact in these locations while the acid-etching concern is largely irrelevant because the surface is not used for cooking or food preparation.

Where we advise against marble: Primary kitchen cooking surfaces in households with young children, high daily cooking volume, or a preference for minimal maintenance. In these situations, quartz delivers a better long-term result and we will tell you that plainly rather than installing a material that will frustrate you within the first year.

Popular Marble Varieties

Marble Types Available Through Our Showroom

We source marble through ST Stones and can discuss specific varieties during your showroom consultation. The following are the types most frequently selected by Polk County homeowners.

Calacatta

White background with bold, dramatic veining in gold and grey tones. The most recognizable premium marble variety. High visual impact in kitchens and bathrooms. Calacatta slabs vary significantly between lots — slab selection in person is essential to confirm the specific veining pattern. Higher cost than Carrara due to rarity of the dramatic veining pattern.

Carrara

White to light grey background with subtle, flowing grey veining. The most widely used marble variety in residential applications. More consistent in appearance between slabs than Calacatta, which makes it easier to plan for large installations with multiple pieces. A classic choice for bathroom vanities, shower surrounds, and kitchen backsplashes.

Statuario

Bright white background with pronounced, dark grey veining. Considered a premium variety between Carrara and Calacatta in terms of visual drama and cost. Statuario's strong white base reads well in contemporary kitchens where the countertop is intended to be a focal point rather than a background material.

Additional marble varieties are available on request. If you have a specific slab in mind from a magazine, design reference, or another showroom, bring the product name and we will confirm sourcing before your consultation.

Marble Care & Maintenance

What Your Marble Countertop Needs to Last

We include a full care briefing with every marble installation. Here is the essential information every marble countertop owner should know from day one.

Sealing Schedule

We seal every marble countertop at installation. Most residential marble should be resealed every 6 to 12 months depending on use. The water bead test is the simple home check: put a tablespoon of water on the surface and wait 10 minutes. If it absorbs rather than beads, the stone needs resealing.

Use a penetrating sealer specifically rated for marble and natural stone. Do not use sealers marketed for granite only. We provide a product recommendation with every installation.

What to Avoid

Avoid all acidic substances directly on the surface: citrus juice, wine, vinegar, tomato products, coffee, soda, and any cleaner that is not pH neutral. These will etch the polished finish on contact. Etching appears as a dull, lighter-toned mark where the polished surface has been chemically removed.

Avoid abrasive cleaners and scrubbing pads. Use a soft cloth or microfiber with a pH-neutral stone cleaner. For daily cleaning, warm water and a drop of dish soap is sufficient when the surface is properly sealed.

Living With Marble

Well-maintained marble develops a patina over time. Minor etching that occurs despite careful use adds character that many marble owners come to appreciate. Italian marble has been used in kitchens and bathrooms for centuries under far harder conditions than a Florida home presents. The material is not fragile; it simply needs the right care approach.

If you are considering marble and concerned about maintenance, visit our showroom and ask to see aged sample pieces alongside new ones. We keep samples that show realistic long-term appearance alongside fresh-polished examples.

Repairing Etching and Scratches

Light etching on a polished surface can sometimes be reduced with a marble polishing powder applied with a felt pad. Deep etching and scratches require professional honing or repolishing by a stone restoration specialist. This is not a warranty or fabrication issue — it is how the material behaves when exposed to acid or abrasion.

For honed marble finishes, etching is far less visible because the surface already has a matte appearance. Homeowners concerned about etching visibility often prefer honed over polished for this reason. We discuss finish options during your consultation.

Marble Countertop Questions

What Homeowners Ask Before Choosing Marble

Installed marble countertop costs in Polk County typically range from $65 to $115 per square foot, including the slab, in-house fabrication at our Auburndale shop, and professional installation. A standard bathroom vanity of 20 to 30 square feet typically runs $1,300 to $3,450 installed. Kitchen marble ranges from $2,275 to $5,175 for a standard 35-square-foot footprint. Calacatta and Statuario varieties are at the upper end of the cost range. Exact pricing is confirmed after a free on-site visit.
When properly sealed, marble resists most stains. The vulnerability specific to marble is etching, which is different from staining. Etching is caused by acidic substances removing the polished finish chemically, leaving a dull mark. It is visible but not a penetrating stain in the traditional sense. A properly sealed marble surface resists oil, coffee, and most food stains. It does not resist acid. Managing what contacts the surface directly is the primary maintenance responsibility for marble kitchen owners.
Honed marble has a matte finish rather than a high-gloss polish. Because honed marble already lacks a reflective surface, etching from acid contact is less visually obvious. For kitchen applications where acid contact is likely, honed finishes are more forgiving in appearance over time. The tradeoff is that honed surfaces absorb liquids faster than polished and require more diligent sealing. Neither finish makes marble stain-proof. Both require the same sealing regimen and the same acid-avoidance practices.
Marble in direct outdoor use in Florida is not ideal. Florida's UV exposure, rain, pool chemicals, and the acid from organic debris all work against the surface over time. Granite is a far better outdoor choice because of its UV stability and hardness. Porcelain slab is the best choice for fully exposed outdoor kitchens. For a covered, climate-adjacent space that is protected from rain and direct sun, marble can work, but we recommend confirming the specific conditions before committing.
Both are excellent bathroom vanity materials and both are regularly installed in Polk County homes. Marble delivers a premium natural stone look with character that engineered quartz cannot fully match. Quartz requires zero sealing and resists the toiletry products that can etch marble over time. For a master bath where appearance is the priority and the homeowner is willing to seal the surface annually, marble is a strong choice. For a high-traffic family bathroom where low maintenance is the priority, quartz is more practical. We walk you through both during a showroom visit.
