Why In-House Fabrication Produces Better Countertops

Most countertop companies operate as showrooms and sales offices — they take your order, send your measurements to an outside fabrication facility, and schedule installation through a subcontractor. The result is a project with multiple handoffs, inconsistent quality control, and limited accountability when something goes wrong.

At J&A Stone Designs, we have operated our own fabrication shop in Auburndale since 2018. The team that templates your countertop is connected to the team that cuts it, which is the same team that installs it. This continuity eliminates the miscommunications and tolerance errors that often occur when templating, fabrication, and installation are handled by separate entities. We fabricate granite, quartz, marble, and porcelain countertops at our shop and install throughout Polk County and as far south as Miami.

Fabrication Process

How Our Fabrication Process Works — Step by Step

01
Material Selection
Granite, quartz, marble, or porcelain is selected at our Auburndale showroom. For granite and marble, slab viewing at the supplier yard is part of the process.
02
On-Site Templating
We visit your home to template the exact countertop dimensions. This includes sink cutouts, cooktop openings, backsplash heights, and any special features requiring precise measurement.
03
Shop Fabrication
Using the template, our fabrication team cuts, edges, and finishes the countertop at our Auburndale shop to the specified edge profile and surface finish.
04
Installation and Finish
Our installation crew sets the countertop, seals where appropriate, installs undermount sinks, and completes a walkthrough with you before closing out the project.
Materials We Fabricate

Four Stone Materials, All Fabricated In-House

Granite Fabrication

Natural granite slabs are among the most demanding materials to fabricate accurately because of the variation between sections of each slab. Our shop has the equipment and experience to cut granite to precise templates and finish edges cleanly across the full range of granite profiles.

Granite Countertops
Quartz Fabrication

Engineered quartz requires careful handling during fabrication to avoid cracking at cutout edges. Our team uses appropriate tooling and technique for quartz fabrication across Pental, Spectrum, and MSI product lines.

Quartz Countertops
Marble Fabrication

Marble is a relatively soft stone that requires skilled handling during cutting and edging to avoid chipping or cracking. Our fabrication process for marble accounts for the material's softness and the precision required to produce clean edges and cutouts.

Marble Countertops
Porcelain Fabrication

Porcelain slab is the most technically demanding countertop material to fabricate because of its extreme hardness. It requires specialized diamond tooling and precise cutting technique to avoid cracking through the slab. Our team has the equipment and experience specifically for porcelain fabrication.

Porcelain Surfaces
Edge Profile Options

Edge profiles are selected during the design phase and cut during fabrication. Common options include eased, beveled, bullnose, ogee, and waterfall edges. Porcelain and granite have different edge profile limitations — we advise on this during your consultation.

Custom Cutouts

Undermount sink cutouts, cooktop openings, integrated soap dispensers, and other custom cutouts are templated on-site and executed during fabrication. Accurate templating is critical to cutout precision — our team handles both steps in-house.

FAQs

Fabrication Questions

In-house fabrication means the countertop is cut, edged, and finished by the same company that sold you the material and will install it. Outsourced fabrication means your order is sent to a third-party fabrication facility. In-house fabrication provides tighter quality control, clearer communication between templating and cutting, and direct accountability when adjustments are needed.
Fabrication typically takes five to ten business days after the templating visit, depending on the material, complexity, and current shop workload. We provide a specific fabrication-to-installation timeline during your consultation so you can plan your kitchen or bathroom renovation schedule accurately.
In most cases we fabricate materials sourced through our Auburndale showroom and supplier partners. If you have already purchased material from another source, contact us to discuss whether we can include it in a fabrication project. Availability depends on the material type and how it was sourced.
