What to Know Before Choosing Marble

Marble Countertops Are Beautiful. They Also Deserve Honest Expectations.

Marble has been a prestige surface for thousands of years. The veining created by its mineral composition, primarily calcite, produces a character that no engineered material fully replicates. It photographs well, ages gracefully when maintained, and adds genuine resale value to Florida homes where it is cared for properly.

It also has real limitations every client deserves to understand before committing. Marble is a calcium carbonate stone, which means it reacts chemically to acids. Citrus juice, wine, vinegar, and some cleaning products will etch a polished surface on contact, leaving dull marks that do not buff out without professional refinishing. That is not a defect in the stone. It is how the material behaves.

Marble also needs sealing at installation and periodic resealing throughout its life to keep its stain resistance. Under-sealed marble absorbs oils, coffee, and colored liquids, and can stain in ways that are difficult to reverse.

We tell clients all of this before the order is placed. Our job is not to sell one specific material. It is to help you choose the right surface for your actual kitchen, your actual household habits, and your actual maintenance willingness. If marble is the right choice, we install it with care and skill. If a different material serves you better, we will tell you that too.

For the marble look with lower upkeep, engineered quartz with marble-like veining is available through our Auburndale showroom, and we compare the two side by side during your consultation.

J&A Stone Designs installing a marble countertop in a Polk County kitchen

Etching is not a warranty issue. Marble etches when it contacts an acid. That is the chemistry of the stone, not a fabrication or installation defect. We explain this before every marble install so there are no surprises after the countertop is set.

Marble at a Glance

Sealing: sealed at install, reseal every 6 to 12 months.

Acid sensitivity: high, polished surfaces etch on contact.

Best rooms: vanities, low-use islands, feature surfaces.

Outdoors: not recommended in Florida sun. Use porcelain or granite instead.

Where Marble Works Well

Where Marble Countertops Work Best in Florida Homes

Marble performs beautifully in the right applications. The key is matching the material to the way the space actually gets used.

🛁

Marble Bathroom Countertops

The best residential application for marble. A vanity sees far less daily acid contact than a kitchen counter, while the visual impact in a master bath is significant. The maintenance is very manageable in a bathroom context, which is why marble bathroom vanities are our most consistently recommended use of the material.

🍴

Kitchen Islands (Low-Use)

Marble on an island used mainly for baking, display, or staging can work well when the household is prepared for the upkeep. Homeowners who bake often specifically request marble for the island because of how it handles pastry work. The key is honest acknowledgment that this surface will etch and will develop character over time.

🏠

Feature and Accent Surfaces

Fireplace surrounds, built-in shelving, dry-bar tops, and decorative elements where no food prep happens are excellent uses for marble. The material delivers maximum visual impact in these spots while the etching concern is largely irrelevant. Many of these are handled through our custom fabrication shop.

Where we advise against marble: primary kitchen cooking surfaces in households with young children, high daily cooking volume, or a preference for minimal maintenance. In those cases, quartz delivers a better long-term result, and we will tell you that plainly rather than install a material that will frustrate you within the first year.

Popular Marble Varieties

Marble Countertop Varieties: Carrara, Calacatta and Statuario

We source marble through ST Stones and can discuss specific varieties during your showroom consultation. These are the types most frequently selected by Polk County homeowners.

Carrara Marble

A white to light grey background with subtle, flowing grey veining. The most widely used marble in residential work, and more consistent slab to slab than Calacatta, which makes it easier to plan large installations with multiple pieces. A classic for bathroom vanities, shower surrounds, and kitchen backsplashes.

Calacatta Marble

A white background with bold, dramatic veining in gold and grey tones. The most recognizable premium marble, and a high-impact choice in kitchens and bathrooms. Calacatta slabs vary significantly between lots, so selecting your slab in person is essential to confirm the veining. It carries a higher cost than Carrara due to the rarity of that dramatic pattern.

Statuario Marble

A bright white background with pronounced dark grey veining. It sits between Carrara and Calacatta in both drama and cost. The strong white base reads beautifully in contemporary kitchens where the countertop is meant to be a focal point rather than a quiet background.

Additional marble varieties are available on request. If you have a specific slab in mind from a magazine, a design reference, or another showroom, bring the product name and we will confirm sourcing before your consultation.

Marble Care & Maintenance

Marble Countertop Care and Maintenance

We include a full care briefing with every marble installation. Here is the essential information every marble owner should have from day one.

Sealing Schedule

We seal every marble countertop at installation. Most residential marble should be resealed every 6 to 12 months depending on use. The water-bead test is the simple home check: place a tablespoon of water on the surface and wait 10 minutes. If it absorbs rather than beads, the stone needs resealing.

Use a penetrating sealer rated for marble and natural stone. Do not use a sealer marketed for granite only. We provide a product recommendation with every install.

What to Avoid

Keep acids off the surface: citrus juice, wine, vinegar, tomato products, coffee, soda, and any cleaner that is not pH neutral. These etch the polished finish on contact, leaving a dull, lighter-toned mark where the polish has been chemically removed.

Avoid abrasive cleaners and scrubbing pads. Use a soft cloth or microfiber with a pH-neutral stone cleaner. For daily cleaning, warm water with a drop of dish soap is enough once the surface is properly sealed.

Living With Marble

Well-maintained marble develops a patina over time. Minor etching that happens despite careful use adds character that many owners come to appreciate. Italian marble has served kitchens and bathrooms for centuries under far harder conditions than a Florida home presents. The material is not fragile. It simply needs the right care approach.

If you are weighing marble and worried about upkeep, visit the showroom and ask to see aged sample pieces beside new ones. We keep samples that show realistic long-term appearance next to fresh-polished examples.

Repairing Etching and Scratches

Light etching on a polished surface can sometimes be reduced with a marble polishing powder applied with a felt pad. Deep etching and scratches require professional honing or repolishing by a stone restoration specialist. This is not a warranty or fabrication issue. It is how the material behaves when exposed to acid or abrasion.

On honed marble, etching is far less visible because the surface is already matte. Homeowners worried about etch visibility often prefer honed over polished for exactly this reason. We discuss finish options during your consultation.

Marble Countertop Questions

Marble Countertop Questions, Answered

Installed marble in Polk County typically runs $65 to $115 per square foot, including the slab, in-house fabrication, and professional installation. A standard bathroom vanity of 20 to 30 square feet usually lands between $1,300 and $3,450, and a standard 35 square foot kitchen footprint runs roughly $2,275 to $5,175. Calacatta and Statuario sit at the upper end. Exact pricing is confirmed after a free on-site visit.
When properly sealed, marble resists most stains. The vulnerability specific to marble is etching, which is different from staining. Etching happens when an acid chemically removes the polished finish, leaving a dull mark rather than a penetrating stain. A well-sealed marble surface resists oil, coffee, and most food stains, but it does not resist acid. Managing what contacts the surface is the main maintenance responsibility for a marble kitchen.
Honed marble has a matte finish rather than a high gloss. Because it is not reflective, etching from acid contact is less visually obvious, which makes honed finishes more forgiving in a kitchen over time. The tradeoff is that honed surfaces absorb liquids faster than polished and need more diligent sealing. Neither finish makes marble stain-proof, and both require the same sealing routine and the same acid-avoidance habits.
Marble in direct outdoor use in Florida is not ideal. UV exposure, rain, pool chemicals, and acids from organic debris all work against the surface over time. Granite is a far better outdoor choice for its UV stability and hardness, and porcelain slab is the best option for a fully exposed outdoor kitchen. For a covered, climate-adjacent space protected from rain and direct sun, marble can work, but we recommend confirming the specific conditions first.
Both are excellent vanity materials, and both go into Polk County homes regularly. Marble delivers a premium natural stone look with character that engineered quartz cannot fully match. Quartz needs no sealing and shrugs off the toiletry products that can etch marble. For a master bath where appearance leads and you are willing to seal annually, marble is a strong choice. For a high-traffic family bath where low maintenance leads, quartz is more practical. We walk you through both during a showroom visit and on our bathroom remodeling page.
