About LVP

Why LVP Is Our Most-Installed Floor

Luxury vinyl plank flooring is constructed in layers: a wear layer on top, a printed visual layer, a waterproof rigid core in the middle, and a backing for sound and moisture isolation. Modern LVP delivers visual realism close to real hardwood at a fraction of the cost, with none of the moisture vulnerability.

In Florida specifically, the rigid core matters more than anywhere else. Concrete slab homes experience natural moisture migration year-round. Hardwood requires extensive moisture barriers and acclimation. Laminate is only water-resistant, not waterproof. LVP's rigid waterproof core handles all of these conditions without specialized prep.

The wear layer thickness determines longevity. Builder-grade LVP typically uses 6 to 12 mil wear layers and degrades in high-traffic homes within a few years. Mid-grade comes in at 12 to 20 mil. We default to 20 mil minimum and recommend 22 mil for kitchens, entryways, and homes with pets. The cost difference is small; the durability difference is significant.

Installation is a floating click-lock system over an underlayment. No nails, no glue, no mortar — planks lock into each other and float over the subfloor. This means damaged planks can be replaced individually in the future. Compare against tile which requires breaking and re-mortaring sections.

For most full-home renovations we recommend LVP throughout living areas and bedrooms paired with porcelain tile in bathrooms. This combination delivers visual continuity, waterproof performance everywhere, and the longest service life per dollar invested. Coordinate with countertop installation and custom cabinets for a full kitchen renovation under one project plan.

Key Properties

What Makes LVP Different

💧
Fully Waterproof

Rigid core construction means spills, leaks, and bathroom moisture cannot damage the floor. Wipe up the spill and the floor returns to perfect condition. The biggest advantage over hardwood or laminate.

🐕
Pet & Kid Friendly

Scratch-resistant wear layer handles dog nails, dropped toys, and dragged furniture. 22-mil premium lines tolerate the worst residential conditions without visible wear. Easy to clean up accidents.

🏗
Easy Plank Replacement

Damaged plank? Pop it out, pop a new one in. The floating click-lock system means individual repairs are simple. Compare against tile or hardwood repairs which are far more invasive.

Choosing the Right LVP

What to Look for in an LVP Spec

Three specs separate good LVP from disposable LVP. Here is what to ask about at the showroom.

📏
Wear Layer Thickness

Measured in mils (thousandths of an inch). 6–12 mil is builder-grade and wears quickly. 20–22 mil is residential premium. We recommend 22 mil for any room with pets, kids, or high traffic.

🏗
Core Composition

SPC (stone-plastic composite) is the most rigid and dimensionally stable. WPC (wood-plastic composite) is slightly more cushioned but less rigid. SPC is the right default for Florida homes.

🔊
Underlayment Attached

Most premium LVP comes with attached underlayment for sound dampening and minor subfloor variation. For optimal sound performance over concrete, additional acoustic underlayment is sometimes added.

Common Questions

LVP FAQs

LVP (luxury vinyl plank) and LVT (luxury vinyl tile) are the same category — just different shapes (plank vs. tile). Both have a rigid waterproof core and click-lock installation. "Vinyl plank" is the generic name. "LVP" is the marketed product name. They're identical in construction.
Yes. The waterproof rigid core handles bathroom moisture without issue. We commonly install LVP in master bathrooms and powder rooms. For bathrooms with significant direct-water exposure like primary family bathrooms with young kids, porcelain tile is still the gold standard. LVP is the more comfortable and warmer-feeling alternative.
Premium LVP with a 22-mil wear layer resists most dog-claw scratching. Large dogs with long nails on lower-grade LVP (6–12 mil) will produce visible wear over time. The wear layer thickness is the single biggest factor. We default to premium-grade for any home with pets.
Slightly cushioned and warmer than tile but firmer than carpet. Compared to hardwood, LVP is similar in firmness with slightly more give from the underlayment. Most homeowners can't tell the difference walking on it. Look quality is now also close to hardwood at normal viewing distances.
Sometimes yes. If the existing floor is flat, sound, and well-adhered, LVP can float over it. The total floor height increase needs to clear doors and appliances. We assess the existing floor during the estimate visit and recommend whether removal or floating-over is the better approach.
Properly installed premium-grade LVP carries 20- to 30-year residential warranties. In typical residential use, expect 15 to 20 years before aesthetic refresh is desired. The wear layer determines functional life. Replacing individual damaged planks extends the floor's usable life indefinitely.
Installed LVP in Polk County typically runs $4 to $9 per square foot including material, subfloor prep, underlayment, and professional installation. Premium 22-mil products run at the upper end. A 1,500 sq ft whole-home install commonly falls between $6,000 and $13,500. Wisetack financing is available.
Yes. Damaged plank replacement is one of the most common flooring repairs we handle. If you have leftover planks from the original install, repair is straightforward. If not, we can match many discontinued patterns from existing stock or recommend the closest current equivalent.
