Marble's veining, created by its mineral composition (primarily calcite), gives it a character no engineered material fully replicates. It is also a calcium carbonate stone, so it reacts to acids: citrus juice, wine, vinegar and some cleaning products etch a polished surface on contact. That is not a defect in the stone. It is how the material behaves.
We tell clients all of this before the order is placed. If marble is the right choice, we install it with care. If a different material serves you better, we will tell you that too. For the marble look with lower upkeep, we compare quartz with marble-like veining side by side during your consultation.
Lines we carry: ST Stones
Our most consistently recommended use of marble. A vanity sees far less acid contact than a kitchen counter, and the upkeep is very manageable.
An island used mainly for baking, display or staging can work well. Bakers often request marble for pastry work, accepting that it will etch and develop character.
Fireplace surrounds, built-in shelving, dry-bar tops and decorative elements where no food prep happens deliver the look with little etching concern.
Sealed at installation and resealed every 6 to 12 months. If a tablespoon of water absorbs within 10 minutes instead of beading, it is time to reseal.
On honed marble, etching is far less visible because the surface is already matte. Honed surfaces absorb liquids faster and need diligent sealing.
We do not recommend marble in direct Florida sun. Porcelain slab or granite is the right outdoor material.

Marble can stain if spills sit without cleanup, and it etches, leaving dull marks, when acidic items contact the surface. Both are manageable with the right habits and expectations.
No. Sealing improves stain resistance, but etching is a chemical surface reaction to acids. A well-sealed marble surface resists oil, coffee and most food stains, but it does not resist acid.
Many homeowners choose honed because it makes etching less noticeable than a polished finish. The tradeoff is that honed surfaces absorb liquids faster and need more diligent sealing. Neither finish makes marble stain-proof.
We source marble through ST Stones. Carrara has a white to light grey background with subtle grey veining and is the most consistent slab to slab. Calacatta has bold gold and grey veining and varies significantly between lots, so selecting the slab in person is essential. Statuario has a bright white base with pronounced dark grey veining. Other varieties are available on request.
It is not ideal. UV exposure, rain, pool chemicals and acids from organic debris all work against the surface. Granite is a far better outdoor choice for its UV stability and hardness, and porcelain slab is the right option for a fully exposed outdoor kitchen.
Both are excellent vanity materials. Marble gives a natural stone look that quartz cannot fully match. Quartz needs no sealing and shrugs off the toiletry products that can etch marble. For a master bath where appearance leads, marble is a strong choice. For a high-traffic family bath, quartz is more practical.
